Scoil Mhuire NS is located in the rural parish of Bornacoola in South Leitrim and is under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, Bishop Francis Duffy. The school was opened as the parish central school in 1980, replacing the two existing schools that were in operation in the parish from the late 1800s, these being Cloonmorris National School in the southern end of the parish and Cloonturk National School in the northern end. The school was built as a 3 teacher mainstream unit in the geographic centre of the parish in the townland of Currycramph. Enrolment grew through the 1980s and it became a 5 teacher mainstream unit in the middle of that decade. By 1990 it was back to a four-teacher unit and in 2004, with decreasing enrolment, became a 3 teacher mainstream unit.

During the past decade the enrolment trend has increased again and as of 30 September 2015, with an enrolment figure of 91, the school surpassed the enrolment figure to become a 4 teacher unit from September 2016. The majority of the pupils are from the rural parish of Bornacoola, which is adjacent to the Shannonside villages of Dromod and Rooskey. A number of the pupils are resident in Dromod village and on the Leitrim side of Rooskey village.
